Centurion combines diesel-engine efficiency with the effects of high engine loading, reduced vehicle weight, and good aerodynamics to push fuel economy well past the 100-mpg mark. And one of the most straightforward ways to reduce emissions is to reduce the amount of fuel consumed. In reality, many other variables affect engine-out emissions, but assuming equal technology, reduced fuel consumption loosely translates into reduced emissions.

Ford CEO Alan Mullaly told Detroit radio station WJR that the company is reconsidering whether to bring its smallest car to the U.S. market. Ford officially introduced the second-generation Ka last week at the Paris Motor Show and up until now has not planned to offer the car in the U.S. The Ka is much smaller than even the Fiesta that will arrive in early 2010.

The folks over at Motor Trend have gotten word that GM is currently talking about the possibility of fitting its 4.5-liter Duramax V-8 turbo-diesel under the hood of the Cadillac CTS. Their sources say that fitting the engine would be relatively easy, so long as Cadillac uses the raised hood found on the new-for-2009 CTS-V.

The other day Mike wrote about Global Green offering a fleet of environmentally friendlier vehicles to shuttle the glitterati to the red-carpet shooting gauntlet, at the Oscars. Reader Tormod wrote in to tell us of a regular car service known as Eco-Limo that currently operates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington and New York.

gmc duramax diesel truck burnout
Get a load of this: the '07 GMC Sierra has the muscle to make waves. And considering this 6.6L V8 Duramax turbo-diesel is an alternative fuel vehicle by default (yes, that's biodiesel), it's hard not to fall in love. With a compression ratio of 16.8:1, overhead valves and high-pressure common rail direct injection, it's got the makings of a true workhorse. Horsepower checks in at 360, torque at 650 lb.-ft., and the engine block is....

Carbon Motors makes a logical point with their new Carbon E7 purpose-built police car: while other government services like fire trucks are purpose-built, police vehicles are usually stock civilian vehicles which are then modified to suit police purposes, with stuff like radios, sirens and other equipment added aftermarket-style.

Feast your eyes on this, car technology and high-mileage nuts. It's a Honda Accord that runs on diesel.
Honda expects to bring the clean-diesel car to the U.S. by 2010. It gets 62.8 miles a gallon on the highway, but otherwise looks and feels like a regular Accord. At that mileage level, the car is about as "clean" as a new Toyota Prius. But if you run it on biodiesel, a form of diesel made from vegetable oil or animal fat, it would be even cleaner than a Prius (Priuses get 60 in the city).
The advantage of diesel cars, however, is that they pack a lot of power.

MANCHESTER, Vermont— Maybe it’s misplaced emotion, but at times, one finds it hard not to feel a little sympathy for the car companies these days. After all, skyrocketing fuel prices have taken a big bite out of the historically profitable truck and SUV segments. Sure, small-car sales are up, but the consumer demand for more
